T.I. and Drumma Boy unite for new trap doc ‘The Birth of Trap Music’
Two key Hip Hop figures behind the rise of trap sound are coming together to document the genre’s origins in a new film project.
Atlanta legend T.I. and hitmaking producer Drumma Boy have teamed up on The Birth of Trap Music, a documentary that aims to capture the roots, evolution and cultural impact of the sound that emerged from the American South.
Both artists serve as executive producers and contributors, offering first-hand perspective on a movement they helped shape. From its early days in Atlanta to its global takeover, the film is expected to explore how trap music grew from raw street storytelling into one of hip-hop’s most dominant forces.
Set to premiere at the Atlanta Film Festival, the documentary places its debut in the city widely recognised as the genre’s home—adding an extra layer of authenticity to the project.
For Drumma Boy, whose production catalogue helped define the sound of Southern rap, the film is a chance to preserve a pivotal era in music history. For T.I., long associated with popularising the term “trap music,” it’s another step in cementing his role as both pioneer and narrator of the culture.
With The Birth of Trap Music, the story of trap is being told by the people who lived it—giving the genre’s legacy the depth and recognition it deserves.
