A new summer programme in New York City is bringing together the worlds of hip-hop culture and technology to give young people a unique opportunity to explore creativity through STEM.

The Sound+Science summer programme introduces NYC public high school students to the connections between hip-hop culture and emerging technologies. Through hands-on workshops and creative projects, participants explore music production, coding, artificial intelligence, sound science, and digital innovation.

The programme is designed to show students that technology is not just about computers and coding it can also be a powerful tool for artistic expression. Students learn how beats are created, how sound works, and how tools such as artificial intelligence and programming can be used to produce new forms of music and digital experiences.

Throughout the programme, participants have the chance to develop their own creative projects, including original songs, beats, performances, and technology-based experiments. By combining the cultural influence of hip-hop with the skills of the modern tech industry, the programme encourages students to see themselves as both artists and innovators.

The programme runs from July 6 to September 2, 2026, taking place on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at 1 Rivington Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. It is free for NYC public high school students, including graduating seniors.

The programme reflects a growing movement to make technology education more accessible and engaging by connecting it with students’ interests and cultural experiences. By using hip-hop as a gateway into science, engineering, and digital creativity, Sound+Science aims to inspire a new generation of creators who can combine artistic vision with technical skills.

As music and technology continue to evolve together, initiatives like this demonstrate how classrooms can become spaces where culture, creativity, and innovation meet.
