Before the Algorithms, There Was Red Alert

An era is coming to an end as Kool DJ Red Alert, legendary hip-hop DJ and radio pioneer, is retiring from radio. It’s the end of an era in terms of radio broadcasting having a major influence on hip-hop culture over a period of more than 40 years.

The Harlem native confirmed that his last radio broadcast will be on November 30th 2026 with a special 4 hour goodbye show on New York’s 107.5 WBLS. For the generation that grew up with hip-hop, Red Alert was far more than just a radio DJ. He was a tastemaker, a cultural ambassador and one of the voices that really did go a long way to in bringing the sound of hip-hop to the wider public.

From his days at 98.7 KISS FM through to HOT 97 and WBLS, Red Alert was a major force in the discovery and promotion of new artists and in the development of a whole generation of talent who would go on to change the music industry. His support of artists such as A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, Boogie Down Productions and Black Sheep and more made him an absolutely vital figure in the development of hip-hop culture, especially during hip-hop’s golden age. In making the announcement he did, Red Alert was very grateful to the listeners who had been with him on the journey. He described it as a real honour to have had the opportunity to be on the air with the community for over 40 years. But whilst he’s moving on from radio he’s by no means putting the headphones down.

Red Alert has confirmed he’s going to be around for special DJ appearances, live events and community celebrations. The timing of his retirement is very significant in that 2026 is also the 50th anniversary of his first turntable and his 70th birthday. There’s a special Red Alert Experience Gala scheduled for November 24th at Sony Hall in New York with appearances from Teddy Riley, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Kid Capri and DJ Spinna. Radio may be losing one of its most recognisable voices but hip hop will never lose the impact of what Kool DJ Red Alert helped to build. Prior to the streaming era, social media and the algorithms that drive it all determined what the audience would hear. DJs like Red Alert were the ones who were actually breaking records, building communities and giving new artists a platform. His last broadcast won’t just be the end of a radio career. It’ll be the end of an era in hip hop radio.

Hip-hop and Culture Salute’s Kool DJ Red Alert — 50 years of keeping hip-hop culture alive. That’s some achievement.
