Hip-hop has lost one of its earliest trailblazers with the passing of MC Sparky D , a pioneering lyricist whose fearless style helped pave the way for generations of women in rap. She was 61. Reports of her passing were shared by her family on July 4, 2026. 

Long before battle rap became a global phenomenon, MC Sparky D was proving that women could stand toe-to-toe with anyone on the microphone. Emerging from Brooklyn in the mid-1980s, she became one of hip-hop’s first female battle rappers and a central figure in the legendary Roxanne Wars one of rap’s earliest and most influential lyrical rivalries. Her 1985 response record, “Sparky’s Turn (Roxanne, You’re Through),” established her as a formidable MC with sharp lyricism, commanding delivery, and the confidence to challenge anyone in the booth.

At a time when female voices in hip-hop were still fighting for recognition, Sparky D refused to be overlooked. She didn’t simply participate in rap battles she helped define what they could be. Her presence, charisma, and uncompromising approach inspired countless women to pick up the microphone and claim their own space in a male-dominated culture.
