Legendary Roots Crew Member Questlove has described AI as a new form of sampling — and that comparison could completely change how we think about AI, creativity and culture.

Sampling has always been essential to hip-hop culture. From the earliest DJs looping breaks to producers digging through crates for the perfect drum hit, bassline or vocal, hip-hop has built an entire creative language around taking something that already exists and transforming it into something new.

Sampling isn’t simply copying. It’s about context, reinterpretation, juxtaposition and transformation.

So when Questlove compares AI to sampling, it’s worth taking the idea seriously.

AI also works with what came before. But instead of a hip-hop producer selecting a break from a record, an AI system can draw on patterns learned from vast amounts of existing creative work. And that’s where things get complicated.

Is AI doing what artists and producers have always done — absorbing influences and creating something new — or has it crossed a fundamentally different line?

With traditional sampling, we can often identify the source. With AI, the influences may be thousands or millions of works, often invisible to the person generating the result.

Maybe the real question isn’t simply whether AI is creative. Maybe it’s: What happens to the idea of creativity when the raw material is everything that came before us?

Questlove calls AI a new form of sampling.

Do you agree? Or is AI fundamentally different from the sampling tradition that has shaped hip-hop?  Where do you draw the line?
