Sprite has never simply sponsored hip-hop it has grown alongside it. From the legendary Obey Your Thirst campaigns of the 1990s to Obey Your Verse in 2015, the brand has spent decades celebrating the artists, lyrics and stories that have defined hip hop culture. Now, Sprite is building on that legacy with its latest initiative, The Living Tracklist.
Rather than creating another “greatest songs of all time” ranking, The Living Tracklist is an evolving collection of 50 of the most influential songs in hip-hop history. The emphasis isn’t on commercial success or chart positions, but on cultural impact songs that changed the direction of rap, inspired generations of artists, and left a lasting mark on music and society.
What makes the campaign unique is that it’s designed to be exactly what its name suggests: living. Instead of presenting a definitive list, Sprite is encouraging fans to debate, discuss and contribute to the conversation around hip-hop’s most important records. The idea is that hip-hop is constantly evolving, and so should the conversation around its defining moments.
To bring the project to life, Sprite partnered with Genius, the world’s leading platform for song lyrics and annotations. Together, they assembled a seven-member Cultural Authority Panel featuring respected voices from across hip-hop media and culture, including radio icon Angie Martinez, journalist Rob Markman, media personality Speedy Morman, Scottie Beam, Nyla Symone, Josh Peas and writer Frazier Tharpe. Their role was to curate a starting point that reflects hip-hop’s influence across regions, generations and eras.
The campaign also extends beyond the music itself. Sprite has released 26 limited-edition collectible cans and bottles, each inspired by tracks featured on The Living Tracklist. By scanning the QR code on the packaging, fans are taken to a custom Genius experience where they can explore lyric annotations, behind-the-song stories, exclusive commentary from the Cultural Authority Panel and enter sweepstakes, turning every can into a gateway to hip-hop history.
The initial list spans six decades of hip-hop, from pioneering classics like “Rapper’s Delight” to modern records that continue to shape today’s sound. More importantly, Sprite isn’t claiming these are the only songs that matter. Instead, The Living Tracklist invites fans to ask the question every hip-hop lover has debated at one time or another: Which songs truly changed the culture?
For a brand whose relationship with hip-hop stretches back more than 40 years, The Living Tracklist feels like a natural evolution. It’s less about settling the debate and more about celebrating the music, the lyrics and the conversations that continue to make hip-hop one of the most influential cultural movements in the world.
